Chapter One - "well, it bounces"
Slam. Hit. Slam. Hit. Slam. Hit. The tennis ball hit the wall over and over again, in the exact same spot. One would make a guess that the heavy stone wall would fall down before the boy would tire. The wall was old, and was a good wall, but only a wall, it could only stand there supporting the building. This boy got better all the time. However this new environment he was visiting seemed to lack what he really needed – proper practice. Hitting a tennis ball alone wasn’t the reason he enjoyed tennis so much. He didn’t mind though, because every type of practice, even of the simplest kind, would bring him closer to his goal. “Take that old man” he groaned as he hit the ball over and over again. It was rare for him to be concentrating on this so much that he didn’t notice him being observed. The long braided observer was all smiles like always. He loved knowing new friends and he hoped this would be yet another one. I suppose inside he felt a bit bad, knowing how the newcomer seemed to be neglected. Even though the boy seemed to like being alone, it felt bad. Feeling like an old timer, he wanted to do something, even though it wasn’t maybe needed. Slam. Hit. Hit. Ryoma watched his tennis ball bounce off the ground, with a basketball following. He turned around to face what appeared to be the basketball’s owner. The cool face of the tennis boy kept cool as he looked towards the smiling face. “Yo. I’m Duo, how about practicing with me?” he asked, wanting to make the place seem friendlier. “Ryoma” he replied. “That’s not a tennis ball”. Not really a very exciting way of communicating though, leaving it for Duo to speak all the real words. No problem, he had plenty… “Bas-ket-ball” Duo spelled out happily. “You and me. It’s a great workout.” Ryoma looked down at the basketball, and at Duo. He had only played it a few times in gym classes, but two positive thoughts entered his mind. It was a fair challenge, and it was a good workout, or so at least the smiling boy claimed to him. “Well, it bounces” he replied, picking the basketball up. He threw it back at Duo, accepting the challenge. “Heh, I’ll play your shirt off for sure” Duo winked, happily feeling he managed to do what he wanted to. A new friend was always something to be happy about. And perhaps a good challenge awaited him as well.
